This homemade Cranberry Sauce with Orange Juice is fresh, glossy, and perfectly sweet-tart. Fresh cranberries simmer with orange juice, orange zest, water, and sugar until they burst and thicken into an easy holiday sauce that tastes so much brighter than canned cranberry sauce.
Put all the ingredients (water, orange juice and zest, granulated sugar, and cranberries) in a saucepan and mix it with a spatula.
Bring it to boil on a medium high heat, then lower the heat to medium/low and let it simmer for about 20 minutes. The berries will burst and produce more juice. Stir occasionally.
Then take the sauce pan from the stove and let it cool off.
You can serve is immediately after it cooled off (in about 30 minutes) or put is in an air-tight container and refrigerate until you need to saucepan it.
Notes
Use fresh orange zest for the best citrus flavor. Bottled orange juice will work, but fresh juice tastes brighter.
Do not worry if the sauce looks thin when it is hot. It thickens as it cools.
Stir occasionally while simmering so the cranberries cook evenly and the sugar dissolves.
Taste after cooking and adjust the sweetness if needed. Cranberries can vary in tartness.
Make it ahead for holidays. The flavor gets even better after chilling in the refrigerator.
